It should be noted here that when Professor Wright recommended Swamiji to the Parliament authorities as being "more learned than all our learned professors put together," he knew whereof he spoke. Although his fields were primarily philology, classical archaeology, and Greek history, his range of teaching was by no means confined to these subjects; for his knowledge, as is noted in the Dictionary of American Biography, was "encyclopedic: ' A formidable scholar, he was well qualified to appreciate Swamiji's own encyclopedic learning, and his opinion in this respect was one that carried weight. Swamiji and Professor Wright had long conversations at Annisquam, and the professor was no doubt astounded by the young Hindu monk who proved to be a saint and savant combined. (ND 1.27)
