The Holy Mother had understood all this. She always stood behind the boys-her sons. At a later date-in 1890-, the contrast between the wealth of the monastery at Buddha Gaya and the living conditions of her boys was to wring this prayer to Shri Ramakrishna from her: "O Lord, You came in human form, sported with the devotees, and went away! Should every¬thing end with that? What then was the need to come and undergo so much suffering? I saw in Varanasi and Vrindavan many sadhus who get their food by begging, and shift their residence from the shade of one tree to that of another. There is no dearth of sadhus of that type. I cannot any more bear to see my children, who have given up everything for your sake, going from door to door for food. I pray that those who renounce the world in your name may never be in need of at least coarse food and clothing. They will live together, taking your name and holding to your ideas and ideals; and people afflicted with the sufferings of the world will resort to them and get relief by hearing your teachings from them. Was this not what you really came for? I am greatly pained at heart to see them wandering about like this!"

ઠાકુર જ્યારે પેટનું અસુખ કરીને કામારપુકુર ગયા હતા, ત્યારે હું તો નાનકડી બાળવધુ હતી. ઠાકુર રાત પુરી થતા પહેલાજ ઉઠીને અમને કહેતા, “કાલે આ આ બધુ રાંધો”. અમે એજ રાંધતા. એક દિવસ વઘારનો મસાલો હતો નહીં. દિદિ બોલ્યા, “તો એમનમ કરો. નથી તો શું કરવું” ઠાકુર એ સાંભળી ને જોરથી બોલ્યા, “એ શું વળી વઘાર નો મસાલો નથી, તો એક પૈસાનો મંગાવીલોને; જેમાં જે લાગે એ બાદ કરવાથી ના ચાલે. તમારા આ વઘારની સુગંધવાળું શાક ખાવા દક્ષીણેશ્વરનું માછલીનું માથું અને ખીરની વાડકી ફેંકીને આવ્યો અને તમે એજ બાદ દેવા માંગો છો? દિદિએ ત્યારે લજ્જા પામીને એ મંગાવી દીધું. કામારપુકુરે લક્ષ્મીની માં અને હું રાંધતા. એક દિવસ ખાવા બેઠાછે ઠાકુર અને હૃદય. લક્ષ્મીની માં સુંદર ખાવનું કરી શકતી. એણે જે રાંધ્યુ હતું એ ખાઇ ને [ઠાકુર] બોલ્યા, “ઓ હૃદુ, આ જેણે રાંધ્યુછે એ રામદાસ વૈદ”. મેં જે રાંધ્યુ હતું એ ખાઇને બોલ્યા, “અને આ છિનાથ સેન”. શ્રીનાથ સેન - હકીમ. લક્ષ્મીની માં થઈ રામલાલ વૈદ અને હું થઈ છિનાથ સેન – હકીમ. સાંભળી હૃદય બોલ્યો, “એ ઠીક, પણ તમારો આ હકીમ તમને બધો વખત મળે, શરીર દબાવી આપવા, પગ દબાવી આપવા માટે સુધ્ધાં. બોલાવવાનોજ રહ્યો. રામદાસ વૈદ- એની વિઝિટનાં ઘણા રુપીયા. એતો બધો વખત મળે નહીં. અને લોકો આગળ હકીમને બોલાવે. એ તમારો બધા સમય નો બાંધવ. ઠાકુર બોલ્યા, “ઠીક, ઠીક. એ બધો વખત છે.” (MK)

માં દુખ કરતી, “એવા પાગલ જમાઇની સાથે મારી સારદાનો વિવાહ કર્યો. આહા! ઘર સંસાર પણ કર્યો નહીં, બાળકો પણ થયા નહીં, ‘માં’ સાંભળવા પણ મળ્યુ નહીં. એક દિવસ ઠાકુર એ સાંભળવા પામીને બોલ્યા, “સાસુજી, એ માટે તમે દુખ કરો ના; તમારી પુત્રીના એટલા બધા છોકરા-છોકરીઓ થશે કે છેલ્લે જો જો ‘માં’ સાંભળીને એ અસ્થીર થઈ જશે. તો [ઠાકુર] જે બોલીને ગયા છે તે ઠીક જ થયું છે. ઠાકુરનો કોઇ પણ વિષય ભગવાન છોડી ને હતો નહીં. મને જે બધી વસ્તુઓ આપીને ષોડશીપૂજા કરી હતી એ બધું- શંખ ના ઘરેણા, સાડી વગેરે નું – મારા તો ગુરુ માં હતા નહીં - શું કરવું ઠાકુર ને પુછતાં વિચારી ને એ બોલ્યા, “એ તારી જન્મદાતા માં ને આપી શકે” – ત્યારે પિતાજી જીવીત હતા. “પરંતુ જો [એમને] મનુષ્ય સમજીને આપીશ નહીં, સાક્ષાત જગદંબા માનીને આપજે”. [મેં] એમજ કર્યું. એવી શિક્ષા એમની હતી. (MK)
