Baltimore is an old city, one of the great seaports of America, had in those days a population less than that of Boston (today its population is far greater) and a gentle, Southern air about it. The next we know, a reporter from the Sunday Herald found Swamiji seated with majestic calm in the hotel lobby. It will be seen from the following article, which appeared in the Sunday Herald of October 14, 1894, that despite their ineptness as hosts and despite the fact that Hiram Vrooman was under he impression that Swamiji was a Buddhist priest, the brothers held their guest in high esteem. Meanwhile, the second meeting of the Vrooman brothers was held in Baltimore on Sunday, October 21 . On this occasion Swamiji was the main speaker, and it was perhaps natural, in view of the brothers' preoccupation with "Goliath," that he should speak of Buddha, who discovered the very root of all evil, all suffering. The Baltimore News of October 22 also reported on the meeting, giving abundant space to the long-winded, electioneering Vrooman brothers. The report of the Baltimore American, however, is more to our purpose: evidently not of the same political persuasion as the brothers, it pointedly gave no space to them at all. The lady from London who invited Swamiji to be her guest was Miss Henrietta Muller, a member of the Theosophical Conference at the World's Parliament of Religions. Swamiji's friend who was staying with her was Akshay Kumar Ghosh, a young Hindu whom Miss Muller had adopted a year or so earlier and whom she was now sending to law school at Cambridge. It had been, actually, Akshay Ghosh who had written to Swamiji on Miss Muller's behalf. (ND 2.215)
